I was sent to Vietnam for work for a couple of years and lived in a small province in the south central region. I will write more about my town later, but for now, I want you to open your mind, enjoy the culture and otherness of Vietnam!
The Heartbeat of Vietnam: Family & Community
Get ready for Vietnam by feeling the warmth of Vietnamese hospitality!
Family is the cornerstone of Vietnamese society, and you’ll often see multiple generations living together.
This strong sense of community extends beyond the home, too. You’ll witness people helping each other out, sharing meals, and enjoying life together in bustling markets and quiet alleys.
Don’t be surprised if you’re invited to share a cup of tea or a meal – it’s a sign of friendship and respect!
Food, Glorious Food! Your Taste Bud Adventure Awaits!
Forget everything you think you know about “Asian food” – Vietnamese cuisine is in a league of its own!
Get ready for Vietnam by experiencing an explosion of fresh flavors, aromatic herbs, and incredible textures. If you are a foodie, Vietnam is for you! Trust me, there is something to eat in Vietnam for everyone.
Here are a few of the Vietnamese staple foods:
- Pho (pronounced “fuh”): This iconic noodle soup is a must-try. Whether it’s beef (bo) or chicken (ga), it’s a comforting, fragrant bowl of deliciousness that you’ll crave long after you leave. (add a bit of chili pepper sauce to spice up your Pho).

- Banh Mi: Prepare for the best sandwich of your life! A crispy baguette filled with savory meats, fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, and a secret sauce – it’s the perfect on-the-go snack. (I love Banh Mi anytime of the day, however it is often eaten for breakfast.)

- Spring Rolls (Goi Cuon & Cha Gio): You’ll find fresh (goi cuon) and fried (cha gio) spring rolls everywhere. Dip them in the incredible peanut or fish sauce for a burst of flavor.

Coffee Culture: Vietnam is a coffee lover’s paradise!
Try the strong, rich ca phe sua da (iced (or hot) coffee with condensed milk) for an energizing kick, or the unique egg coffee (ca phe trung) for a creamy, sweet treat.

Note: Although I am not a coffee drinker, living in Vietnam for two years, I promised myself to try the various varieties of hot and cold coffee drinks, and it did not disappoint. Egg coffee was one of my favorite, but coconut coffee was also a delicious retreat on a hot day.
Vietnamese Street Food
Don’t be afraid to try the Vietnamese street food! It may be a cart on the street in the living area of a shop or home. It doesn’t matter if you see locals eating, trust that it’s delish!
Street food is often the most authentic, delicious, and affordable way to eat. Just look for places with lots of locals – that’s usually a good sign!
Motorbike Mania: The Rhythm of the Streets in Vietnam
The first thing you’ll notice in Vietnamese cities is the sheer number of motorbikes! They weave and flow like a river, creating a unique symphony of honks and engines. Crossing the street can feel like an Olympic sport at first, but here’s the secret: walk slowly and steadily, and the bikes will flow around you.

Let me repeat – when crossing the street, walk slowly and steadily and amazingly the motorbikes will flow around you. Do not run, do not stop in the middle of the flow of traffic – walk slow and steadily
If you are nervous about crossing the street, wait for a local and they will help you cross the street.
It’s organized chaos that you’ll quickly get used to and even find charming!
Consider taking a motorbike tour to truly experience the city like a local – it’s an exhilarating way to see the sights!
Temples, Pagodas, Traditions & Timeless Beauty
Vietnam boasts a rich history and spiritual heritage. You’ll encounter beautiful temples and pagodas throughout your journey. When visiting these sacred sites:
- Dress Modestly: Cover your shoulders and knees as a sign of respect.
- Remove Your Shoes: It’s customary to take off your shoes before entering.
- Be Respectful: Keep your voice down and avoid disruptive behavior.
- You might even stumble upon a traditional water puppet show – an ancient art form that’s both mesmerizing and entertaining!
