How I Determine my next travel destination?
So many times I am asked, “How do you know where to go?” And the answer is always it depends…really it depends on many factors and situations
Below is a list of 10 ways that I determine where my next travel destination will be.
1. Where There is a Cheap Flight or a Long Stopover
Normally, I would fly direct from New York to London to visit my daughter, but if you book early enough there are reasonably priced flights with Icelandair to London with a long stopover if you wish to Iceland.
And I flew from Boston to London on TAP Air Portugal for $122 with a 2-day layover in Lisbon Portugal. Read about the great time I had in Lisbon here.
2. My Bucket List of Places I Desire to Visit
Yes, I have a list of places I really want to travel to one day. I set up travel alerts to be able to keep my eyes on flights and times of certain destinations I desire to go to; and if the price is right, I find the time. It’s that simple.
3. Great Experiences and Stories from my Travel Friends
I have friends that travel all the time. Not just for vacation, but that’s their daily life of travel. Some are digital nomads, others are retirees, and others just love to travel. If I hear a great travel story; that destination will soon be put on my bucket list of places to visit next.
4. Places that Peak My Cultural Curiosity
I always wanted to visit Africa. I had no idea where or when, but when my host daughter was to get married and invited me to her wedding; that was all I needed to take a trip to the Motherland.
5. Visiting Family and Friends
As a newbie traveler, sometimes it’s best to start traveling to a destination where you know someone that lives there. Although you can stay in a hotel; just the fact you have someone to give you a few tips of where to go and what to do provides comfort to some.
6. Inexpensive Trip with a Tour Group
Tours can be expensive and although I prefer to plan my own itinerary, I could not pass up the opportunity to go on a 10-day tour to China.
The price was right, and I had phenomenal time on my tour. And to top it off, without even requesting, China gave me a 10-year visa to come back and forth ten years…and don’t mind if I do. (After this pandemic dies down).
7. Where I Can Combine Virtual Work and Vacation
When working online, you can work just about anywhere that has an internet connection. Although there are places where the internet is not strong, if there is a strong Wi-Fi signal, to be able to do my job…I will see you there.
8. A Tourist Attraction that I Really Want to Experience
For reasons unknown, I’ve always wanted to see the old 1950 cars driving down the street in Havana. Over the years when hearing about Cuba, it really was at the top of my bucket list to travel there one day. And, therefore, when I did, it didn’t disappoint…as Cuba is one of my favorite travel destinations.
9. Visit a Country Where the Food is Delish
Being a foodie, Southeast Asia has won the food category or me. It’s spicy, cheap and such a wide variety of dishes to choose from. I usually find delicious food wherever I travel to, but the Land of Smiles is one of my Favorite spots to enjoy a meal.
10. Depending on my Budget
My budget will also determine my travel destination. Although, I try to be frugal, at the same time, I also want to have a great time, eat good food and have lots of fun when I travel.
