Maputo, Mozambique’s capital city, is located on the coast. You can find beaches all around it and in some of its suburbs.
Although Mozambique’s Inhaca Island may be considered the major attraction for beaches, Maputo also has beaches from 2 miles to 150 miles from the capital city.
One word of caution, if the ocean’s tide is high, be careful of the undercurrent in the water as it gets deep pretty quickly.

Praia da Polana
This is the closest beach to the capital.
It is located 5 miles from from Maputo it has white sand. The The ocean floor is mostly rock at the entry of the water, but once you are in waist deep or deeper, sandy floors can be found.
The east side of the beach has a restaurant, bar and showers.
This resort offers various watersports, featuring jet skis and boats for fishing or sightseeing.
It also has bars and restaurants with cafes offering Mozambican seafood specialties.
Praia Vermelha
A small & quiet location with calm blue water perfect for snorkeling or swimming. A few restaurants are available on site that offer mozambique seafood dishes along with other snacks like chicken livers, mozambican clams steamed in coconut milk, etc… If you’re planning to go on a weekend make sure to reserve your spot by Thursday
This is is one Mozambique’s most popular popular beaches because of its long white sand and calm blue water, making it a perfect place for families visiting Maputo.

Namibia Beach
About one hour away from Maputo. Take a boat or a bus to get there and then stay at one of the many small hotels available for tourists. There isn’t much water sports available but it is a very beautiful beach with white sand and amazing clear waters.
Bazaruto Beach
This island is fairly far from Maputo about 500 miles, but for beach enthusiasts Bazaruto Beach has several pure white sand beaches with crystal clear waters which you can swim in freely without worrying about dangerous animals such as sharks or crocodiles. This island is a paradise for snorkeling as it is home to many types of fish and corals.
Inhaca Beach
The peninsula located across the Bay from Maputo. Inhaca is a very nice beach popular with the locals who can afford to have a boat ride to get there. It’s not so easy to access but if you do, you will find a very serene and calm environment suitable for camping or just spending your time in nature.
Getting to Inhaca Island beach involves taking a ferry from Maputo, from the Katembe pier. As of 2021, the ferry leaves Katembe at 7:30 am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and at 11 am on Fridays.
Returning back to Maputo the Ferry leaves Inhaca on each of these days at 3 pm.
The ticket costs approximately $5 each way, but remember to have $2 to pay for the small boats on the Inhaca side that will take you from the Ferry to the shoreline. This because the ferry is not able to dock at the pier.
Important Note:
Once you arrive by boat to Inhaca Beach — you have to wade a short distance in shallow knee-high water from the boats to the shore;.
Make sure you have the appropriate clothing to be able to get wet.
Upon arrival on the Island there will be a $3 tax that must be paid.
In total a Ferry Ride and Taxes from Maputo to Inhaca Beach will be approximately $10 per person.
Ibo Island Beach
This island located about one hour from Maputo by boat is famous among Mozambicans for its beauty and its beaches which are some of the most beautiful in Mozambique due to their white sand and clear waters. The capital of Ibo island (called Ilha de Mocambique ) has been inhabited since the 15th century and was once a very important commercial center during colonial times.
Inhambane Beach
This beautiful city on Mozambique’s coast is famous for its beaches, especially Tofo Beach which is perfect if you are looking for surfing or some other water sport.
Maxixe Beach
Another great beach in Maputo’s surroundings with white sand and crystal clear waters – definitely worth staying there for more than one day.
Xai Xai Beach
Located in Maputo’s surroundings, this small town offers several small but relaxing beaches with amazing vegetation. You can even find monkeys living near Xai Xai .
